Landmark Ford Road Church Moving Operations to Cherry Hill Road, Garden City
DEARBORN HEIGHTS, MI February 14, 2020 – “The church with the green roof”, Christus Victor Lutheran Church (ELCA) on Ford Road between Beech Daly and Gulley is closing its doors after a final 10:30 a.m. worship service on February 23, 2020. Friends of Christus Victor are cordially invited to join the congregation for its final worship at this site, with the Reverend Doctor Don Kreiss, Bishop of the Southeast Michigan Synod [https://www.semisynod.com/] of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America [https://www.elca.org/], preaching and presiding.
The congregation is partnering in mission with Good Hope Lutheran Church, seven minutes to the south and west, at 28680 Cherry Hill Rd, Garden City, through an ecclesiastical merger [http://goodhopeelca.org/]. The Christus Victor Learning Center, operating since 1981, relocated last September under new ownership with a new name, to a building next door to Good Hope Lutheran Church. The new childcare center, “It Takes a Village Academy,” is on Cherry Hill Road just east of Harrison [https://www.ittakesavillageacademy.org/]. The Christus Victor Learning Center staff and families transferred to the new academy.
While the childcare center is no longer under the auspices of the church, a partnership with Good Hope has been forged through an initiative called Village Spirit. Children from It Takes A Village Academy can elect to come to Good Hope each Thursday morning for chapel, and the two congregations have already been working together to support childcare center parents in cultivating a sense of community, as they grow into being “the village” it takes to raise a child.
“On behalf of the congregation of Good Hope Lutheran Church, we are thrilled and excited to have the Christus Victor congregation join us in worship and combine forces to spread the good news of Jesus Christ into the surrounding communities,” says Deacon Keith Miller, Minister of Good Hope Lutheran Church in Garden City. “Together our local mission efforts are enhanced, and our opportunities for service strengthened. We look forward to the journey ahead.”
Worship at Good Hope is Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m., with Sunday evening informal worship at 6:00 p.m. Ash Wednesday worship is at 7:00 p.m.; each subsequent Wednesday in Lent a 6:00 p.m. soup supper will be followed by Holden Evening Prayer. All are welcome.
The Ford Road landmark with the copper roof was dedicated in 1964 when Ford Road Lutheran Church changed its name to Christus Victor and moved five blocks to the west. The property has been sold.
